“Small Small” (2010) (Revised 2020)

I wrote Small Small in Freetown, Sierra Leone in 2010. “Small small” is a commonly used phrase in that part of the world, which can mean “gently,” “slowly,” or “bit by bit.” It is one of my first works composed outside the standard Equal Tempered tuning system. While my initial goal in experimenting with alternate tuning systems was to seek out new and unfamiliar sonorities, working with historical temperaments and just intonation has revealed to me intersections among ancient European and Middle Eastern musical traditions. Such intersections have greatly informed my work for the past decade.
